Wild Canid Research Center (Wolf Sanctuary)
Our annual trip to the Wild Canid Research Center has always been known as our Wolf Sanctuary trip and is usually a highlight of our mid-spring adventures.
If you're old enough to remember the TV show, Wild Kingdom, then you surely remember Marland Perkins. Well, he and his wife, along with others, founded the Wild Canid Research Center in the hills of Missouri just west of St. Louis, Eureka to be exact. Here, they house and study several species of wolves and other canids with the hopes of reintroducing them to the wild. Our visits encompass tours of the facilities, wolf viewing, and occasionally listening to them howl. We often go during the day and again just after dark for their "Campfire" sessions.

Most years, we try to plan another stop along the way; somewhere the kids will enjoy spending time. St Louis City Museum, Meramec Caverns, and the St Louis Zoo are just a few of the places we have been.

You really haven't experienced the wild until you can stand in the pitch black of night and listen to a mountainside light up with multiple wolves howling at you.
